DGIST’s Robotics Systems Research Division, headed by Jong-hoon Lee, announced that a team led by Senior Researcher Dae-gun Oh had developed Korea’s first ultra-high-resolution through-wall radar, capable of detecting objects behind walls and other obstacles in real time.
The team developed the radar entirely with domestic technology, including its underlying concepts, core modules, radar implementation and performance evaluation.
Based on a multidimensional shift-invariant structure using array-processing techniques, the technology offers superior resolution compared with conventional through-wall radar.
The researchers also introduced a computationally efficient, low-complexity ultra-high-resolution range-estimation algorithm, enabling real-time processing even within an embedded system with limited computing resources.
Using FMCW through-wall radar technology, they were able to detect a target hidden behind a wall within an error range of several centimeters, an achievement described at the time as the first of its kind in Korea.
As the radar may be applied to both military and civilian activities, its broader use was expected to expand.
Oh said that although research into through-wall radar had progressed worldwide, research focusing on ultra-high-resolution systems was still limited. By securing the core technology, he added, DGIST could help lead developments in this field internationally.
