At a National Assembly seminar on July 23, Rep. Yoo Yong-won pointed to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs, small-drone incursions, and gray-zone provocations such as trash balloons and GPS jamming. He said combined manned-unmanned systems must be fielded urgently, Asia Today reported.
Hyun In-taek of KODEF said North Korea may see cheap, hard-to-counter unmanned systems as a way around its conventional weaknesses. National Assembly Defense Committee Chair Sung Il-jong cited the Russia–Ukraine war as proof that drones are a new paradigm of warfare.
TORIS Executive Director Hyun-chul Kim took part in the discussion session, which was held in Small Conference Room 1 of the National Assembly Members’ Office Building and chaired by KAIST Professor Yang Byung-hee.
Presentations came from the Agency for Defense Development, Hyundai Rotem, LIG Nex1, Hanwha Systems, KAI, and the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality. They covered R&D status, standardization and modularization, ground, maritime, and air unmanned systems, and testing and reliability.
The discussion panel included DAPA’s drone project team, drone company Nearthlab, and TORIS. A drone industry expert said unmanned systems would become core weapons of future battlefields and called for practical, cost-effective systems spanning land, sea, air, and space.
