Radar detection concept originally illustrated by KBS News; the reported detection distance exceeded 3 km.
A joint research team from Korea and the United States developed a system that detects small drones more than 3 kilometers away.
The reported performance was comparable to that of leading technology developed by Israel’s RADA, widely recognized at the time as a world leader in drone-detection radar.
A DGIST team led by Senior Researcher Dae-gun Oh, together with Professor Young-wook Kim of California State University, Fresno, announced development of the drone-detection radar system.
The team had previously developed a system in 2016 using ultra-high-resolution radar signal processing to detect drones at distances greater than 200 meters.
The latest system applied AESA radar technology, which electronically steers the direction of transmitted and received signals, to extend maximum detection range.
In testing, the new system detected a Phantom-class drone measuring approximately 55 centimeters wide, 55 centimeters long and 40 centimeters high at distances exceeding 3 kilometers.
Hardware components for the radar system were jointly developed with domestic small and medium-sized enterprises.
