DGIST, under the Ministry of Science and ICT, announced on July 16 that it had developed a drone-detection radar system capable of identifying extremely small drones at a distance of more than 3 kilometers.

According to the institute, the research combined active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar technology, which increases maximum detection range, with ultra-high-resolution radar signal processing for accurate drone position estimation.

In an AESA radar, the individual modules making up the antenna incorporate semiconductor amplifiers and phase shifters, enabling control of the direction in which electromagnetic waves are transmitted and received.

The research team also planned to improve target-identification performance by developing radar perception technology based on generative adversarial networks (GANs), an emerging deep-learning architecture.

Senior Researcher Dae-gun Oh said that the team would continue working to raise the international standing of Korea’s radar technology.
